The Basics

thefashanel

There are several items in one's wardrobe that should be considered essential. Yes, you guessed it - the basics. For me, this is a long list spanning from tops, bottoms, sweaters, shoes and outerwear in a variety of neutrals; far too many for just one post but rest assured, you will read about them all eventually. However, I would like to call out a few special layering and outerwear pieces right now that I intend to feature quite often.

Before I get into it, I'd like to first go over the base. Just like with building a house, you must start with a solid foundation - a pair of black skinny jeans, a basic white tee and a pair of neutral toned booties. You can add or remove layers as you like but I find that this simplest of pairings is perfect to customize for any season. I recently acquired this particular pair of jeans from Abercrombie & Fitch, the Chelsea booties are a super comfy pair by Franco Sarto in Birchwood and the tee is a soft, ribbed, scoop neck from H&M which I have worn and loved for some time now.

The first layering piece is a beige open front cardigan that I believe everyone should own, and most everyone probably already does. This particular one is by B.P. and was purchased from Nordstrom during their Black Friday sale this year. I find it runs a little big but still cute for an 'oversized' cardigan look - this is an XXS (and for reference, I am 5'5/110 lbs). The material however, is incredibly soft and thick. One very important thing to note about me is that I absolutely hate scratchy sweaters - and this one is an absolute dream in terms of softness and texture. Lastly, I prefer clean lines and simple design and the bell sleeves on this cardigan add just enough interest to suit my taste.

The Sweater Blazer - my new favorite piece of clothing and another recent purchase over Black Friday. Yes, I took advantage of the sales and I don't regret it one bit. This one is from J. Crew, size XXXS and the fit is ideal. If you work in an office (or ever plan to go back to the office) and you don't have this, you're really missing out. It is so comfortable but still adds shape and structure to your look. I also intend to wear this in a more relaxed setting to slightly dress up a casual outfit but still maintain that same level of comfort.

The Moto Jacket - this one has been all over the feeds this year and last as it is so flattering and so versatile - as you can see, my kids love it too :). I purchased this Blank NYC suede moto jacket on Amazon in the color Coffee Bean, size XS, although there are lots of color options available (here). This one will certainly have it's days in the sun come spring.

Another piece in my J. Crew cart last month was this amazing wool Cocoon Coat in the color Sandstone, size 00. I've been eyeing this jacket for a while now and finally decided to take the plunge. I love the look and the pink satin lining and hidden pocket add a little extra 'luxe' which makes me so happy.

I hope you enjoyed this first look into my wardrobe and found the information useful, inspirational, or both! Take care and talk soon.
